Cost of Living is a site-specific new media film made for the Piccadilly Lights screen. It depicts a home in cycles of order and increasingly violent disarray before its walls come apart and its contents break free. The work gestures to the precarious nature of ‘home’—a universal right challenged by predatory housing markets and violent invasions causing mass displacement.
However, instability also invites possibility, carving out a space for radical reimagination and a departure from the status quo. The film presents cycles of disorder that eventually culminate in the dismantling of the boundaries that confined the ‘home,’ embracing the void and endless possibilities it holds.
A volatile home
Cost of Living took a technique that we developed for Box Body and Emerge:ncy and brought it to an unprecedented miniature scale. We began with a tiny ~120:1 model of the Piccadilly Lights, filled it with store-bought pieces of realistic dollhouse homeware, rigged cameras and lights, and flailed it about while filming in slow-motion. Careful foley design brought the illusion to life, and a meandering score by Luling Wang tied each scene together. This piece has yet to debut on the screen it was envisioned for.
